Introduction: Obesity is a disease that has been trending upwards, that has substantial impact and presents with high degree of heterogeneity among individuals.
Objective: The main objective was to identify phenotypes based on bioimpedance parameters and biochemical parameters.
Methodology: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted, it included adults with obesity (according to bioimpedance and/or BMI criteria) who attended Hospital Clínica Nova between 2022 and 2024. Descriptive statistics (means, median, frequency, percentage) and inferential statistics (one-way ANOVA y chi-square tests) were performed, as well a principal component analysis as the main statistical approach.
Results: A total of 1,328 individual were evaluated, of whom 959 met inclusion and exclusion criteria. The median age was 42.4 years (standard deviation 10.9), and there was a higher prevalence of males (n=683, 71%). Two phenotypes were identified: one characterized by a higher fat mass and higher muscle mass, and another with lower amount of these. Individuals with a higher fat and muscle mass exhibited a more unfavorable metabolic profile.
Conclusions: Of the two phenotypes, the one that has a greater muscle mass component presents with an unfavorable metabolic profile.
