Abstract

This article examines the relationship between the physical and social characteristics of neighborhood environments and personal capacities in later life. It identifies the challenges faced by older adults in pursuing their goals and desires within everyday activities, as well as the opportunities available to enhance their ability to live independently within their neighborhoods.

From the perspective of the geography of aging, the findings are connected to environmental gerontology and include recommendations for inclusive design. Grounded in the concept of successful aging, the study describes urban situations and characteristics that contribute to strengthening physical, mental, and social capacities, while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

In sum, the article offers an inclusive and intergenerational vision for building neighborhoods composed of diverse individuals in real-life contexts, emphasizing the importance of leveraging family and community environments to foster quality of life and well-being in later stages of life.
