Abstract
The Bayer process consists of the extraction of alumina from bauxite, and it represents 90% of alumina production. It is the largest pressure leaching operation worldwide regarding tonnage. The annual transformation of bauxite is shown in Fig. 1,[1] where a dramatic increase from the 1890 to 1910 and a continuous steady increase through the decades can be observed. In 2014, the bauxite mine production worldwide was 234 million tons.[2]
