Abstract

Recent trends in academic research have led to an increase in the publication of papers that aim to evaluate the literature of a specific research field in order to identify both research trends and appropriate topics for future research. As literature reviews become more methodological and standardized, approaches such as systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis are becoming more popular. One aspect of literature characterization that is often mentioned but has not yet been formalized is the notion of research field maturity; essentially, whether the research area is new and highly theoretical or has been more developed with convergence on best practices. The information gained from this type of analysis can help to further characterize the literature and identify future research areas as well as work to legitimize the literature and the conclusions drawn from it. This paper extends previous work which defined maturity and presented a framework for assessment based on three criteria: authorship, breadth of methods, and academic/practitioner relationship. This study applies the framework to the final paper set from a previous systematic literature review and the maturity of this field is assessed to be moderately mature with some criteria appearing stronger than others. In addition, the usefulness of the framework and future work are discussed.
