Abstract
Low vision refers to a reduction in visual function caused by eye diseases and/or refractive errors that cannot be fully corrected with conventional lenses, medication, or surgery. To address this condition, optical aids for either distance or near vision must be tailored to the specific needs and daily activities of each patient. Among these aids, Galilean telescopes are commonly used by individuals with low vision, as they provide customized magnification according to the user’s requirements. This study presents the development and evaluation of hybrid Galilean telescopes designed for informed volunteers diagnosed with low vision. The hybrid design integrates 3D-printed lenses combined with glass commercial lenses. A comprehensive optical characterization was performed, including measurements of magnification and field of view for each telescope configuration. To evaluate the clinical performance, the hybrid design was compared to a telescope configuration assembled entirely with commercial glass lenses. Clinical evaluations of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in patients with low vision are presented.
