Abstract

This article examines the problem of responsibility in the discourse of success within
neoliberalism. With this purpose in mind, the motivational speech by Jordan Belfort is taken as the object of analysis. The analysis uses the critical concept of ideology proposed by Thompson (2002), focusing on rationalization and naturalization as strategies of ideological operation. Thus, the simplified moral universe of winners and losers in neoliberalism is made evident: a regime in which social circumstances do not play any role when explaining the success and failure of the subject, reducing social inequality to a matter of individual will.
