Abstract

to Know if there is a correlation between the thickness of the lipid layer and non-invasive tear break up times. A prospective, cross-sectional and observational study was conducted. All participants completed a dry eye symptoms questionnaire (OSDI), subsequently, an ophthalmologic examination with a slit lamp was performed to observe the margin of the eyelid and the orifices of the Meibomian gland. The measurements were made in the following order: (1) thickness of the lipid layer LLT(Polaris, CSO); (2) corneal and conjunctival surface staining using fluorescein; (3) Non-invasive tear break up times NIBUT (Antares Topographer). Dry eye was defined in patients who had an OSDI questionnaire greater than 12 and non-invasive tear break up times less than 10 seconds. Fifty right eyes of 50 patients were studied, with an average age of 33.88 ± 16.42 years, 54% were female. 32% of the patients had dry eye. The average value of the LLT was 76.20 ± 29.35 microns and the NIBUT was 11 ± 4.5 seconds. The relationship between the LLT and the NIBUTwas analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient. There was a positive, slight correlation between both variables that It was not statistically significant (r = .2008, n = 40, p = 0.166) In this group of patients there was no correlation between the thickness of the lipid layer and the non-invasive tear break up times This is a 2020 ARVO Annual Meeting abstract.
