Abstract

The relationship between cinema and popes can be understood as an extension of the history of visual culture, hence the participation of Pope Francis in documentaries, although not a novelty in the Vatican, does imply a more direct and permanent presence in the audiovisual discursive narratives of contemporaneity. The research analyzes the global content in documentaries with the participation of Pope Francis, according to the method proposed by Dominguez and López (2017), through an approach that aims to identify the type of documentary, the topics described, the locations recorded, the participation of social subjects, their time on screen and the forms of dialogue between the characters. The results show that although the main character is indeed the pope, there is also a balance with the social subjects involved in the argumentation of the story, with recurring elements at the time of the election, the reminiscences to St. Francis of Assisi, from a global perspective.
