Journalistic coverage of the Venezuelan crisis in L’Osservatore Romano during 2018

The social crisis in Venezuela has a background of more than two decades, however, during 2018, the international community did not recognize the electoral process in which Nicolás Maduro was confirmed for a second term, being the first Latin American country, in the XXI century, with a rupture in the democratic institutionality, which resulted in the largest migratory mobility of the continent. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the journalistic coverage of the crisis in the South American country, based on what is reported in L’Osservatore Romano, the printed media of the Holy See, which collects news information and the impressions of the Vatican’s diplomatic machinery. The study analyzed 295 issues published during the election year, through the description of the relevance of news, the hierarchical level with the quantification of notes and the spaces they occupy, and the identification of the topics, as part of the editorial decision in the framing of its daily edition, printed in Italian. The research showed that more than 70% of the contents covered during the study period were present in the twelve months, and that the focus was on the political situation and its humanitarian implications.
