Can Local Universities Inhibit International Migration?

The availability of public services in source countries can influence international migration flows. This paper evaluates the impact of the 2019 opening of small university campuses in 100 municipalities in Mexico, the main origin of international migration to the United States. The findings indicate that, in the year after their opening, the presence of these institutions decreased 3 per cent international migration, with the higher effect in municipalities with a significant expansion in coverage.
