Analysis of journalistic discourse about indigenous population: the case of Nuevo León, México

Through the dissemination of news, the media influence people's perception of a certain group; therefore, they can also influence the ideologies, attitudes, and behaviors they have with respect to it, contributing to legitimizing and perpetuating certain stereotypes or to counteract them. For this reason, it is pertinent to analyze and understand the discourse of the press in Nuevo Leon about the indigenous population that lives there. Through the critical analysis of the discourse of 352 news items, it was identified that indigenous people are associated with their cultural expressions or their problems. Therefore, they are represented in a biased way as vulnerable people who experience practices of discrimination, invisibility, infantilization, and folklorization, ignoring other characteristics that they also possess and perpetuating the discourses that legitimize these practices.Keywords: Racism, Critical Analysis, Discourse, Digital Press.
