Abstract

Simulations indicate that adding a second or even third layer of glazing with low-E coating compared to traditional windows will reduce heat transfer through the façade. However, incorporating additional glazing layers remains an impractical technology for the Mexican population, especially in vulnerable sectors. The cost of a double-glazed window can escalate up to 10 times that of a typical single-glazed window. Furthermore, only 2% of the national housing stock currently features double-glazed windows. Given that 70% of the country’s housing stock is naturally ventilated, it is essential to consider insect screens in window design to maintain household health. These screens can reduce heat transfer by up to 7% when placed on the internal face and up to 14% when positioned externally. Consequently, this research aims to propose innovative solutions, including designs produced through 3D printing and non-conventional, economically viable materials—potentially sourced from recycled materials—to make energy-efficient windows accessible across all sectors.
