Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is one of the major health problems nowadays. It has been shown that it is not uncommon for its presentation to be associated with the presence of overweight or obesity. The prevalence of SAH in young adults between 18 and 40 years old is approximately 10-15% and increases with age. The diseases that can be prevented by controlling blood pressure include acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure and peripheral arterial disease, among others. Problem: We propose to determine the prevalence of SAH in a student population and identify the possible risk factors to which it may be related. Objective: To establish the prevalence of SAH in a student population in northern Mexico. Methodology: All available subjects who are actively enrolled in the first year of the degree or higher will be followed for 4 years. Results: 237 participants were included at the beginning and 77% ended the follow-up. We found out an increase in the prevalence of SAH in men from 3 to 11% and in women from 0 to 1% during the follow- up. Conclusions: SAH is a prevalent disease in our environment, exceeding the figures reported by other authors within the Mexican Republic in the young population. Implications: The importance of timely primary diagnosis of chronic-degenerative diseases should be highlighted to implement measures early.
