Evidencia actual del efecto de los probióticos en el tratamiento de enfermedades dermatológicas: Revisión de literatura

Student thesis: Thesis

Abstract

This work focused on studying three highly prevalent diseases: atopic dermatitis, acne, and rosacea, commonly treated with pharmaceutical drugs. However, the impact of a balanced diet that includes the consumption of prebiotics and supplementation with probiotics has been minimized. Gastrointestinal health is closely related to improving the signs and symptoms of these dermatological diseases.
The objective aim of this work was to review updated scientific evidence to determine the potential effect of the use of oral probiotics and prebiotics to reduce the signs and symptoms of these diseases. In addition, the main probiotics used in conjunction with pharmacological treatment were identified and classified. The mechanisms of action by which this potentially beneficial effect was described. Likewise, foods were identified that can exacerbate the appearance of signs and that, through a restriction diet, can increase the improvement of patients with these diseases. Aspects related to the existing state of the art of the most critical studies found in the following databases were reviewed, analyzed, and discussed: Clinicalkey, Elsevier, Medline, PubMed, MedicLatina, and Ovid, using the resources available from the University of Monterrey Library. It was found that there was sufficient evidence to conclude that the consumption of a balanced and/or restricted diet, along with the consumption of probiotics, and pharmacological treatment, showed potential positive effects on the control of these diseases. Moreover, the evidence showed that probiotics consumption significantly reduces signs and symptoms in patients of all ages with atopic dermatitis, acne, and rosacea.
