Abstract
Introduction: Humanity has faced a health challenge that has brought various consequences. The WHO recommends that people between the ages of 18 and 64 do moderate aerobic physical activity for 150 to 300 minutes a week or intense physical activity for 75 to 150 minutes a week. Objective: To investigate updated scientific evidence to determine the effect that the confinement and the application of sanitary rules instituted by the government have had on the physical activity and lifestyle of Mexicans.
Materials and methods: Descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study in Mexicans over 18 years of age who have accepted the privacy notice as well as an informed consent form. People who answered more than twice, ambiguous data and pregnant women are excluded from the study. In total, 1065 surveys were applied in Google Forms®, of which 77 were eliminated, leaving 988 for the final sample. It was a non-probability sampling and a self-selected sample.
Results: Analyzing the results obtained through the statistical program IBM® SPSS® Statistics Version 28.0.0.0, with the T-Student statistical tests, dispersion diagrams, frequencies, modes, means and percentages. The figures and tables shown previously did not show the existence of a significant relationship between the different variables in relation to BMI.
Conclusion: Despite the fact that many physical and recreational activities and sports were stopped by the confinement by COVID-19, it is recommended to continue to include physical activity at home for prevention, not only to obtain physical health and avoid weight gain, but also to prevent negative psychological effects.
Discussion: Following the analysis of the information described by the present study and the authors, Romero-Blanco et al., Giustino et al., and Robinson et al., it’s determined that there is no statistically significant relationship between the levels and frequencies of physical activity and time that the participants remain seated in min/day relative to their BMI. Moreover, it is determined that there are other factors with greater influence on the BMI and therefore, on the health status of the participants.
