Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the corneal endothelium density according to the number of evaluated cells and to find the most constant number of cells. Methods: Prospective transverse and observational study. Non-contact specular microscopies were realized, counting 20, 30, 40, 50 and 70 cells. The data were analyzed to find the number of cells closer to the average and the variability of the results. Results: Thirty specular microscopies were evaluated, from healthy volunteers. 66% male, with an average age of 28.3 ± 13.72 (range of 17-84). The average of endothelial cells in the group of 20 cells was 2541.66 ± 451.64 cells/mm2, in the 30 cells group was 2552.70 ± 431.12, in the 40 cells group was 2439.53 ± 417.36, in the 50 cells group was 2542.16 ± 97.46 and in the 70 cells group it was 2569.60 ± 361.72. The general average was 2549.26 ± 407.29. There was no significant statistical difference between the groups. Conclusions: In this group of healthy patients, there's a high reproducibility in all endothelial cell counts and there's no difference between the number of cells studied.
