Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this investigation is to study the incidence, clinical presentation and to evaluate the surgical results of the patients with neurogenic blepharoptosis evaluated at the Department of Oculoplastic and Orbital Surgery. Methods: We retrospectively studied the clinical files of all the patients with the diagnosis of neurogenic blepharoptosis between January 1996 to December 2000. Results: 711 patients were admitted with the diagnosis of blepharoptosis, 8.44% presented neurogenic blepharoptosis. The most common etiologies were: post-traumatic third-nerve palsy (30.95%), congenital third-nerve palsy (19.05%) and Marcus-Gunn syndrome (16.67%). 66.67% of the surgically corrected patients had a good result. Conclusion: Neurogenic blepharoptosis can be surgically corrected with good results, following a conservative management with a close post-surgical follow-up, in order to prevent complications related with the absent Bell's phenomenon associated with this type of blepharoptosis.
