Abstract
Orexins are peptide neurotransmitters that regulate arousal and motivated behaviors such as feeding and mating. Decreased levels of orexins ara causally correlated with narcolepsy and their synthetic agonists can be used to treat this disorder and induce wakefulness. Orexins also participate in regulating addictive behaviors and modulation of the orexinergic system could be useful as a pharmacological target for drug addiction and obesity treatment.
