Abstract

The standardized rates are used to compare an event in a study population with a standard population controlling the confounding effects and also allow the event to be dimensioned according to the same standard. In this paper, the performance of several methodologies for the estimation of standardized rates through confidence intervals, some based on the normal distribution, Poisson and gamma, are evaluated with a simulation study and by means of a new index. This new index allows us to consider both the level of coverage and the amplitude of the interval and evaluate the quality of each of the intervals evaluated jointly. The methods of confidence intervals with better performance according to the proposed index are identified, among these are the gamma, moments and bootstrap methods.
