Activity: Transferencia de ConocimientoDivulgación a público en general

Description

2018 was characterized by the growth of the conflictive situation in Venezuela, which, had direct effects on the other countries of the continent. However, the greatest symptom evidenced of the crisis was in the humanitarian field, which led to the beginning of the most important migratory flow in Latin America, in recent years.

Situations with humanitarian implications may have different levels, due to the number of people affected and the complex conditions in which the crisis develops (Barreto, 2019), whether for war, political or environmental reasons and are therefore recognized by the international community as ranging from complex humanitarian emergencies to generalized humanitarian crises.

Although the United Nations World Organization has not officially declared a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, various press resources point out how its spokespersons refer to the Venezuelan situation as a humanitarian crisis (ONU, 2018). In this regard, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement urging Venezuelan authorities to respond to the humanitarian crisis (UNHCR, 2020).

The study addresses the description of the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, reviewed in L'Osservatore Romano, in 2018, through the identification of food, health, and human mobility conditions, in the printed media of the Holy See.

29.8% of the journalistic coverage on Venezuela, carried out by L'Osservatore Romano in the study period, was focused on the humanitarian field (Portillo, 2022), and 90.5% of the headlines were informative and thematic, due to the seriousness and urgency of the crisis, with humanitarian implications (Portillo, 2023).

The study sample consisted of 47 texts published in the daily evening Italian-language version of the Holy See newspaper. They dealt with the issue of humanitarian conditions in the Venezuelan situation.
