Description
The theme of the Lamb, together with that of the Good Shepherd, is one of the most reproduced references during the first centuries of Christian art; its representation crosses the entire artistic history of humanity with expressions in mural frescoes, sculptures, bas-reliefs, mosaics, stained glass, textiles and illustrations present in the collective imagination. The present exploratory study develops a conceptual historical approach to the iconography of the Paschal Lamb in art and architecture, as a Christological identity element between the 1st and 15th centuries, in order to describe the context or origin of its use; to identify the most representative aspects of its iconography; and to determine the common categories for the analysis of the theme. The methodological work is approached with a retrospective evolutionary design, through the design of a comparative matrix that establishes characteristics, artistic styles and the temporal dating of at least 80 representations compiled over time. Its importance lies in the validity of the theme from the artistic and architectural point of view as a symbol in the liturgy, and which is referred to from biblical and patristic texts with catechetical and mystagogic value. It starts from the very source of Sacred Scripture to justify the origin of the symbol, from the Paschal Lamb of the story of Exodus 12 (victim lamb), to the statement in John 1, 29 (saving lamb) and Revelation 21, 23 (lamb of light). The representations of the Lamb of the first centuries revolve around these perspectives: on the one hand, Christ as Passover Lamb; and on the other a dimension of Christ as Lamb of light, as the work of Baudry (2016) points out. To contemporaneity comes the echo of both meanings, symbols that have remained current and almost unchanged over the centuries in religious art and architecture.Period | 9 Dec 2024 |
